On October 17, 2023, the French competition authority (Autorité de la concurrence) issued an opinion to the government on the meal voucher market. Benjamin Suchar, CEO and co-founder of meal voucher issuer Worklife (currently being merged with Crédit Agricole S.A.), reacts to this opinion.

The possibility of capping issuer commissions has crystallized tensions between industry leaders and new entrants.

He invites employers to seize this opportunity, without waiting for the adoption of a new law on the subject.

At a time when purchasing power is becoming a priority due to soaring inflation, a number of start-ups are proposing to make existing or little-known benefits that companies can grant to their employees more accessible.

The start-up Worklife advises employers on these different levers. Its activity has tripled in one year. As an alternative, the government intends to promote the implementation of profit-sharing in SMEs.

As of July 1, it will no longer be possible to use meal vouchers on weekends and public holidays. "This is a wise measure because we must not deviate from the purpose of the meal voucher, which is to finance the lunch break," adds Benjamin Suchar, head of the issuer Worklife.

Worklife, the employee benefits start-up, is launching Avantage Auto to make it easier for employees to pay mileage allowances for commuting. Employees will be able to benefit from this offer via a payment card. Since April 2022, the mileage allowance scale has been increased by 10% to compensate for the rise in fuel prices. This measure was announced by the former Prime Minister Jean Castex on 25 January 2022 in order to safeguard the purchasing power of a certain proportion of the French workforce.

To help its employees cope with inflation, Worklife, a human resources company, is banking on social benefits. Since January, Clément Falchier has even been getting an extra boost: 50 euros more per month for his daughter's crèche.

Inflation has been rising steadily over the past few months and there is no risk of it slowing down with the war in Ukraine. This increase necessarily leads to a drop in the purchasing power of French households. However, companies can act on this issue of their employees' purchasing power without necessarily going through a salary increase, which is the most costly solution for them.

French startup Worklife is planning to disrupt the employee benefits market and win over leading companies with its new multi-benefit payment card. Founded last year, the company is a cross between Fintech and HR tech and is working to provide "concrete and tangible" benefits in a post-Covid landscape to reconnect companies and employees.

As a newcomer to the employee benefits market, worth 1 trillion euros in Europe, Worklife intends to shake things up by placing benefits at the core of HR strategies as a real performance lever. This is a market which has previously seen relatively little innovation, with employee benefits being increasingly perceived as commodities and losing their impact on company performance.

The start-up, Worklife, and Ada Tech School organised the third edition of the workshop "Graine d'entrepreneuse" on 19th March. As women at the head of start-ups continue to be a minority, the hackathon, only for girls aged 7 to 12, aims to give the next generation a taste for entrepreneurship.

"With the development of remote work, how we commute is evolving and ways to travel are multiplying. Many employees are looking to manage their different travel options, and want to be able to combine a monthly travel pass or public transport tickets with cycling or carpooling," explains CEO Benjamin Suchar, who emphasises the flexibility of his solution.

The doubling of the maximum spending limit for meal vouchers, from 19 to 38 euros, will be extended until the end of June. This was announced by Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of Economy and Finance, on Wednesday on RMC/BFMTV.

Restaurant owners are in favour of extension... but against "crazy" commissions. Feedback from the profession is mixed, according to a study by ViaVoice Institute on behalf of Worklife: 53% of restaurant owners say the extension is a good measure, 22% say it is insufficient and 25% say it is a bad measure. According to the same study, 60% of restaurant owners want this measure to be extended, but 40% were against its continuation.

Benjamin Suchar, founder of Worklife, explains how to accelerate the deployment of sustainable commuting in companies.

While 78% of restaurant owners claim that paying with meal vouchers is not profitable, Worklife, the first ethical and solidarity-based issuer, is proposing a new commission-free model for restaurant owners.

A survey carried out by Viavoice for Worklife, published on Thursday, shows that 60% of restaurant owners would like the 38 euro cap to be extended. "Reactions remain mixed, as 4 out of 10 restaurant owners do not want this measure to be extended," notes Worklife. "We are in favour of maintaining the cap at 38 euros, but it shouldn't stop there. We also call for the regulation of commissions so that support for restaurant owners is real." Benjamin Suchar, founder of Worklife.

According to a Viavoice survey for Worklife, six out of ten restaurant owners would like to see the €38 meal voucher limit extended. However, almost all of the respondents deplore the fact that the commissions charged by the issuers are too high.

The startup, created in October 2020, has chosen to base its services on accompanying companies towards new forms of work. Among other things, the company supports its customers in their efforts to work remotely

Employers can pay for the costs incurred by their employees in commuting to and from work using alternative means of transport such as bicycles, carpooling, public transport (excluding subscription fees), motorised personal mobility devices (such as electric scooters) or shared mobility services (e.g. bicycle hire services) as part of the sustainable mobility package.

Worklife is a 100% dematerialised meal voucher solution that takes no commission from restaurant owners. "We hope to have launched a movement and to have been able to make a real difference in comparison with other issuers. Another economic model based on creating value for companies is possible", says Benjamin Suchar, founder and CEO of the solution.

The UMIH, the leading employers' union in the CHRD sector (Cafés - Hotels - Restaurants - Discotheques) has welcomed the arrival of Worklife, which is likely to revolutionise the meal voucher market as it is the first not to take commissions from restaurant owners.

The French startup, an expert in employee benefits, is acquiring the complementary business of its German counterpart, which is the originator of a corporate parenting support platform. With this operation, Worklife wants to continue to "enrich its client portfolio with new prestigious European companies", such as Contentful, Hellofresh or Taxfix.

Worklife decided to counter the latest Swile campaign with "the card of the moment", their smart card that automatically recognises the type of expenditure and directs it to the corresponding wallet.

The group, which also owns the Yoopies brand, wants to encourage companies to help their employees financially with childcare. Site visits have been soaring since 31 March.

The Worklife application is coupled with a bank card and allows all the benefits that employees receive from their company to be grouped together: childcare, for example, but also meal vouchers and commuting allowances.

The Ile-de-France start-up with 75 employees offers companies to finance childcare in the same way as meal vouchers.

I think parents have realised that looking after children and remote working at the same time is mission impossible," says Benjamin Suchar. You have to experience it to realise it.

Companies are realising that financing childcare for their employees contributes to performance.

The Worklife group offers a service for companies, allowing them to finance various services for each employee, such as the recruitment of a nanny, via a payment card.
